During 1912's summer months, botanist Robert Fiske Griggs received alarming reports of catastrophic events unfolding near Kodiak Island, Alaska. The subsequent year, Griggs organized multiple research trips to investigate the phenomenon. His team encountered a startling scene: the island lay buried beneath twelve inches of volcanic debris. The devastation extended beyond the island to Mount Katmai on the mainland, where the terrain remained shrouded in dark ash and continued emitting toxic vapors.
